Things to Do in Bonaire: Beyond the Diving

Bonaire has a reputation as a diver paradise, and fair enough. The marine life here is absolutely ridiculous. But here is the thing: you do not need to put on a tank to have an incredible time on this island. I spent a week in Bonaire last March, and honestly? Half my favorite moments had nothing to do with what is underwater.

Whether you are on a cruise, staying at a resort, or just passing through, here is what you should actually do with your time in Bonaire.

Explore Kralendijk on Foot

You can walk the entire downtown in about twenty minutes, but you will want longer. The colorful Dutch-colonial buildings along the waterfront are a feast for the eyes, especially at sunset. I wandered into a random art gallery and ended up chatting with the owner for an hour about her fish trap sculptures.

Grab a coffee at a local spot, then wander through the boutique shops. Do not skip the floating market by the harbor - the vendors sell the freshest mangoes you will ever eat.

Klein Bonaire

This tiny uninhabited island sits just off the coast, and you can take a water taxi over for about $15 round trip. There is nothing there except beaches, but that is the point. I spent an entire afternoon on the western side, the only person for miles, reading a book while waves lapped at the shore.

Pro tip: bring water and snacks. There is literally nothing on Klein Bonaire except sand and iguanas.

Salt Flats and Flamingos

The salt flats near the southern tip of the island turn pink from all the flamingos, and you can see them from the road. Pull over at the viewpoint near the salt works - you will get photos with dozens of these ridiculous pink birds wading around.

Early morning is best for flamingo sightings. They feed at dawn and are much more active then.

Washington Slagbaai National Park

Here is where Bonaire surprises people. This national park takes up the entire northern part of the island and has hiking trails, viewpoints, and wildlife you will find nowhere else. I drove the loop road and stopped at every viewpoint. The view from the top of Brandaris on a clear day? You will understand why the Dutch claimed this place centuries ago.

You need a 4x4 for some of the inner roads, but the main loop is doable in a regular car. Go early - it gets hot.

Lac Bay

The eastern side of the island has a shallow lagoon that is perfect for windsurfing. Even if you have never stood on a board, there are schools along the beach that will teach you. I watched a bunch of beginners wipe out repeatedly for an hour and still had a great time from the shore with a cold drink.

For Cruise Ship Visitors

If you are only in port for the day, do not panic. The cruise terminal is walking distance from downtown Kralendijk. You can easily see the main sights in 4-5 hours:

• Walk the waterfront
• Take a water taxi to Klein Bonaire
• Grab lunch at a seafront restaurant

Do not bother renting a car if you are on a tight schedule - traffic is minimal and you can see the main town on foot.

Is Bonaire Worth Visiting If You Do Not Dive?

Absolutely. The diving is incredible, yes, but Bonaire has beaches, culture, nature, and some of the best snorkeling you will find anywhere. I met plenty of visitors who never put their head underwater and had a blast.

It is not a party island or a mega-resort destination. It is low-key, friendly, and perfect if you want to actually relax instead of rushing from one tourist trap to the next.
